Rav Yitzchok Ginsburg says that the Besht proposed that all of life be consecrated to Hashem. Prior to that, there was mundane life and mitzvos. People pursued religious activity through mitzvos alone. With the Besht, nothing was mundane.
Then we have the Manalim. They don't even care about mitzvos for "nothing else mattered," but Torah study, meaning Gemara lomdus. And even that isn't infused with religiosity. It's just chess. Here's a depiction of what they reduced life to.
Is there a God of the world or is He too stuck in the Beis Midrash where only certain pages of certain Gemaras are to be found on the tables?
That's what they reduced life to.
